How old am I?

Age is counted the way a calendar counts it, not as a plain division of days. We start at your date of birth and move forward year by year for as long as a full year fits before today. Then we do the same with whole months, and whatever is left over is counted in days.

Because months are different lengths, the leftover days are measured against the month that just ended rather than an average month. That is why this calculator can say “1 month and 2 days” where a rough calculation based on 30-day months would be a day or two out.

Leap years are included automatically. Every February 29 you have lived through is counted in your day, hour and second totals, so those numbers stay accurate over a long life rather than slowly drifting.

The other date that matters is today's. Because a new day starts at different moments around the world, your browser tells us which timezone you are in and we take today's date from that — so nobody is told it is their birthday a day early or late. If your browser does not report a timezone we fall back to UTC and say so alongside the result. Nothing is stored either way; the age is recalculated from scratch on every visit.

How is my age calculated?

We count full years from your date of birth to today, then the leftover full months, then the leftover days. It is the same way you would count on a calendar, so the answer matches how age is recorded almost everywhere.

Do leap years change the result?

They are handled for you. February 29 is counted as a real day, and the day totals include every leap day you have lived through.

I was born on February 29 — when is my birthday?

In years that do not have a February 29, this calculator treats February 28 as your birthday. That is the most common choice, though some countries use March 1 for legal purposes.

Which date is my age calculated for?

Today's date, shown on the calculator and again with your result. Your browser tells us its timezone so today's date matches the calendar where you are; if it cannot, we use UTC and say so. The age is recalculated every time the page loads, so a saved link always shows your age for the day you open it.

Does the time of day I was born matter?

No. The calculator works in whole days from your date of birth, so you get the same answer no matter what time you were born or what time you visit.

Is my date of birth stored anywhere?

No. The date is used to work out the answer for that one page view and is never saved to a database or an account.

Can I share or bookmark my result?

Yes. Your date becomes part of the page address once you press Calculate, so you can bookmark it or send the link to someone else.
